We have one tiny closet, and a big commitment to a positive attitude. Fortunately, the bed that he built for me a couple of years ago has plenty of storage underneath: I’ve always lived in small spaces with my daughter. Yet adding one man to the square footage sure does make a difference. (For the record, let me add that he’s a super tidy guy who picks up his dirty socks — and more.) So, how am I staying (mostly) sane as the three of us live in 700 square feet, as we build our addition? 1. We try to keep on top of the clutter. After finishing a project — or, even if we’re in the midst of one — we tidy up before moving onto something else. That’s because our living room table is where we eat and work. 2. We use headphones. I listen to music when I’m working, and Thunderpants plugs in when he’s watching Frontline. (Well, most of the time, anyway — at the moment, he’s got the Tour of France 2011 turned up.) 3. We do our best to resolve conflicts quickly. When you get into an argument, and there’s no place to retreat, it’s best to just take a deep breath and work it out as soon as possible. At the end of the day, though, I realize how fortunate I am. Compared to other families in developing countries around the world, a family of three living in 700 square feet might be considered a luxury. So, how big is your home? Do you live in a small space?
